This isn't my first time travelling by myself as a woman.youtube.com I've been to Iran, Turkey, Armenia and Georgia so far on my trip. I'm heading to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan for the next leg.youtube.com For some reason this part of my year makes me the most nervous. Fellow adventurous women who went off on your own around the steppe, desert and mountains of central Asia, please impart your wisdom and encouragement to give me strength! I'm pretty good on my own but I keep hearing horror stories that I'm finding hard to shake from my brain. I'm excited about seeing the endlessness of Kazakhstan and the mountains of Kyrgyzstan but I feel like I'm loosing my nerve a little. How did you cope? How did you find the language barrier? How elaborate was your story about your fake family? What did you wear? Did you couch-surf, camp, hitchhike? I keep coming across other solo travellers who are men so it's great for general advice on what to see and how to get around but they can't tell me about clothing! Help settle a fellow SFT (single female traveller) worried mind.
General advice is to stay a ways inland and out of the city-proper to reduce costs. Who cares where you sleep? South to North, and these are a couple hours apart, driving, outside of rush "hour". Be polite to the police: chances are good they're Marines. The best zoo in the world, bar none. Many many other museums: Air & Space, tall ships, the USS Midway aircraft carrier, and many, many more museums, many free or very reasonable. Sea World and Legoland amusement parks. Lots of beaches, tide pools, and short drives inland to deserts, which will be cool (nothing for a Coloradan to worry about).
San Diego is the home port of the Pacific Fleet, and Top Gun, the Navy SEAL school, and the 1st Marine Division are nearby. It's not uncommon to see them doing some evolution or the other. The poorest selection of museums of the three, though you can go up to the central LA museums easily if you avoid rush hour. Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure, and Knott's Berry Farm (another theme park). Lots of beaches, some tide pools. Travel to Catalina Island is convenient, but seasickness may be an issue.youtube.com Generally less congested than SD or LA. Generally less expensive, except for Disneyland. I've never done it since I live here, but I understand beach house rental can be affordable; some people commute by season. Many museums, though not as good a choice as SD, I think. Better on dinosaurs, such as the La Brea Tar Pits. Hollywood. Olvera Street--do not go under the huge tree: pigeons. Universal Studios Tour, and Magic Mountain amusement park. Beach access can be a little dodgy because of high population. Going up to Santa Barbara is also an option.
How a SURFing Social Skills Curriculum can Impact Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Source: Journal of the International Association of Special Education .youtube.com Spring2014, Vol. 15 Issue 1, p27-35. Abstract: An average of one in 88 children in the United States are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012). Individuals with ASD demonstrate poor social interaction, poor social competence, and lowered self-esteem. Early intervention treatment can improve social development. In recent years more non-traditional therapies, like therapeutic surfing, have emerged. This study measured the outcome of a SURF camp social skills curriculum for 11 campers with ASD aged between 10 and 16 years, 18 parents, and 26 surf camp staff.
Data were collected one week prior to camp, at the completion of camp, and then again two weeks following camp. Quantitative analysis revealed assertion, responsibility, and engagement as statistically significant in the social skills domain. I always look to get a Miata in foreign destinations if we can, often come up empty, now and then we score. Credit to my wife Andi Mathers for finding us a Miata to rent in South Africa, NB is what they had so that is what we took, pics below. Such a treat being from the USA to get hands on a RHD manual trans Miata. Drove the Cape Town coast, rented surf boards in Muizenberg for fun afternoon [https://swellbali.com/bali-surf-guide/ Surf spots Bali] session of chest high waves, my first time surfing with a Penguin in the break. Drove that NB all over some proper Miata roads shifting with the 'wrong' hand, had a blast!
The NW Batbusters are excited to announce plans for 2 teams next year and are currently looking at players for both! We are bringing back our 14A program after a season off and will continue our 18Gold team. The 18Gold team is a college development program that plays a true 18Gold championship slate along with a full exposure schedule. This is a true college development program including advanced skill development along with a heavy dose of strength and speed/agility development. Along with our efforts around those goals, we will also focus on extensive communication/recruiting with college coaches for those who need it.
This team requires a significant time and energy commitment and focuses on those who have the drive to play at the collegiate level. The 14A team will be led by long time Head Coach Ken Brooks and will frequently practice jointly with the 18 team. This team will focus on mental game growth along with detailed skill development and the ability to understand and implement advanced game concepts at next level speeds. This team will also spend a significant amount of time with our strength and conditioning staff and will learn how to lift and condition properly, how their body works and how to help it move efficiently and safely. Players from this team will be developed with the intent of moving up to the 18 team as they prove ready.
The NW Batbusters are sponsored by Wilson (Demarini - Louisville Slugger - Evoshield - Atec) and Mizuno and are a proud to utilize/wear their equipment, uniforms and cleats. The 14 team will play a similar schedule with a little less travel and a strong focus on local championship play. The 18 team is retaining a significant core of our team from this season but have a number of openings available and will look at ALL positions. We may hold an open tryout for the 14 team IF open positions are still available (more details/dates on this to come if needed).
Again, we would prefer to see prospective players in a game situation or at a practice. We may also hold private tryouts on a case by case basis so please contact us if you would like to discuss this.youtube.com We are an open book with no secrets to hide so feel free to ask any questions you may have! All communication will be closely held and considered private. We look forward to hearing from you soon! We took a Lyft to Gene and Jude's for breakfast hot dogs which were the best of the three places we tried on the trip, then sloshed through the snow to Hala Kahiki. What a beautiful time capsule of a place! When you enter there's a very long bar with a plethora of stools and a bunch of seating across from it. That leads to a small dining area that overlooks the patio/garden, then you pass into another room where there's a small service bar and another, larger dining area that has a different view of the garden. This is where we spent most of our time.youtube.com They also have a gift shop beyond this room. Sadly, we couldn't see the water feature in action or really enjoy the extravagance of the garden because it was under snow.
MC Jet Sterling introduced the Cocktail Preachers who played the first two CATTs and reunited to play two sets for us. Great instrumental background music for the days festivities covering surf, exotica and some hits of the 60s. There was a raffle in between their sets where people won swag from Pussers, Plantation, Kona Brewing and other sponsors. There was also a market place with several vendors hawking tiki wares, mugs, carvings, syrups, and more. My one negative note would be that the drinks I had were undrinkable. They offer a flight of cocktails where you can get 5 miniatures which I thought was a great way to test some options and determine what I'd like to order a full size of.
