One day a relative of mine said that he has a company and he would pay me if I could do some coding work for him. I accepted it, hired an accountant to do the taxes and I was doing part-time freelancing while doing my full-time job. The project was refreshing. It felt like I was basically getting paid for my programming hobby and my relative was amazed by the results I produced.


I was doing it for 3-4 months until I told him that I want to take a break and I could continue from September. Towards the end it was hard doing my full-time job and part-time freelancing at the same time. I've lost my interest in my full-time job. I still do care about code quality and being a competent developer. However, it takes me longer than I used to to finish something. If I'm okay with less money and want more free time, I work less. If I want more money because I want to buy something, I take up more work. I don't feel myself picky. I have 6 months of savings to live off from. I could try if this works for me, and if it doesn't, than I would either go back to my old job or look for another company. Working from home require absolute self-control. That's okay, because I had to have self-control when doing the side gig at first. I had a timetracking app for myself and if I was slacking off, I couldn't bill those hours (however, a flat rate would motivate me to finish the work sooner). If I only have my relative as a single client, I'll just end up as a regular employee with no benefits. Looking for more clients is difficult, although I could use a testimony from my current client.
