It has been a rough October weather wise with lots of big wind, rain, heavy seas and white water. However, that type of weather has just lit up the fishing. It seems that the rougher the water, the better the fishing. We've also seen a series of northeasters pound the coast in recent weeks, and the fishing could not be better in these storms.youtube.com By day, the bass and blues are rolling in the white water and at night the big keepers are lurking in the breachway waters. The nasty weather has set up some of the best October fishing I have ever experienced.
If you are looking for action in rough water, head to rocky locations.youtube.com These places can take a pounding in rough water, yet the water in these spots remains clean and productive. I especially like that Gansett shore from Narragansett Beach to Galilee in rough, northeaster type days. It has a proven track record of producing. You will have to search this area for fish as pods of them can be found anywhere in this five mile stretch. In recent weeks, a few plugs have been especially productive. The float and jig has been the top producer for schoolies, especially in low water rocky locations in the daytime. Small needlefish plugs are a close second. Cocahoes mounted onto 3/4 oz. jigheads have also produced. At night, I have been hitting the big bass in the breachways with Bombers, Hogy lures and plastic eels mounted onto jigheads.
Allen Evans caught this 47 pound white sea bass off of Elephant Rock on Thursday. On my day off. If he wasn't such a nice guy I'd think he was deliberately trying to hurt my feelings. Julie Helminiak sent in this picture. I don't know the story behind it, but I think this is meant to hurt my feelings. This is what it's all about. Rodbender Sportfishing sent over these pictures of the Discovery Hills Youth Group with their rockfishing limits. We've got to get these kids out on the water and rockfishing is a great way to do it. The salmon fishing is slowing but the fish are still out there and worth fishing for. The usual spots still, although a little deeper (100-130 feet of water) has been working better for some. Halibut is still slow but there's still some coming from the Hog Island area, not that large on average but keepers. Jigging along the weedline with white bucktails with a bit of squid seems a little better on average that even live bait.
Joe DaCruz and Tad Bowers show off some of their (and Jerry DaCruz's) catch of 1 salmon, 6 halibut and 6 sole from Ten Mile on Thursday. If you look closely you can tell where they were fishing. Ten Mile has been pretty good for halibut this past week, with a few salmon thrown in as well. McLure's has also been good for both species. Tomales Point and the Trees have been good for salmon. When I say good, I mean that there were fish caught. Not too many salmon limits anymore but some decent scratch fishing. The rockfish have been a bit slower. Some of the slow could be caused by the fish feeding all night. We are experiencing a bloom of bioluminescent dinoflagellates, or light-emitting plankton. The ocean glows with every movement in the water. It is a bad time to be a small fish, since every movement lights up an "eat me" sign. Last night we watched no fewer than 6 sharks feeding right at the pier, and those were just the ones near enough to the surface that we could see them. One shark chased a fish onto the beach. It's a heck of a show but probably not good for daytime fishing. The wind is forecast for Monday and Tuesday and if the water cools off the lights should go out.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Many of the top walleye fishermen in the country made the trip to Port Clinton, Ohio, this week to tackle the Walleye Capital of the World in the Cabela’s/Bass Pro Shops Masters Wallace Circuit tournament. The anglers will be casting for cash Friday and Saturday, with weigh-ins at 3 p.m. Jefferson Street Pier in downtown Port Clinton. Friday’ weigh-in will be followed by a Youth & Family Fishing Clinic, with the first 50 kids receiving a free road and reel. The Lake Erie walleye fishing is so good right now, despite the topsy-turvy weather, that many of the party fishing boats have made the switch from yellow perch to walleye.
The transition is a combination of poor to mediocre perch fishing and outstanding walleye fishing all along the Ohio shoreline. Hot spots this week for walleye have been in 41 to 50 feet of water from Lorain to Sheffield Lake. A big school of large walleye has been on fire just east of the Lorain Dump, which is located north of the mouth of the Black River. Trolling with Dipsy Divers, Jet Divers and Tru-Trip Divers trailing colorful 4- to 5-inch spoons at 2.6 to 3.0 miles per hour has worked very well.youtube.com The Beaver Park to Lorain area has also been very good, with anglers reporting doing best while trolling with crankbaits, or diving plugs, in 32 to 40 feet of water. Reef Runner lures have been the hot crankbait. The waters off Vermilion, Cranberry Creek and Huron are all producing six-fish limits.
Near-shore walleye fishermen from the Lake Erie Islands to Fairport Harbor are using 2- to 3-ounce bottom-bouncers and spinner rigs in skinny 12- to 18-foot depths. Longer 42-inch leaders with gold blades and trolling speeds of 1.2 to 1.5 miles per hour have been catching walleye. The area off the Niagara Reef Complex in the Camp Perry area has been very good for medium-sized walleye. The restricted Lake Erie spring bass season ends Saturday. Smallmouth anglers are casting tube jigs, drop shot rigs and live bait rigs with crayfish or shiner minnows around structure in 24 to 28 feet of water. There have been some surprising catches of walleye in the last half-mile, or so, of rivers before they spill into Lake Erie.
While some rivers are a bit stained because of rains, when they clear fishermen are casting 3- to 5-inch diving plugs or small in-line spinners to tempt walleye searching for schools of emerald shiner minnows. Limits of river walleye are not common, but some anglers consider it a challenge to hook and land a couple of them. The waters below the first riffle in the lower parts of the river are possible locations for hungry walleye. The Cleveland Metroparks will lure fishermen to its ponds June 26 and June 28 with stockings of channel catfish. Most will be in the 1- to 3-pound range, but some trophy cats will be included. The stockings, which are funded in part by Slyman’s Restaurant in Cleveland, will be made at Shadow, Ledge, Judge’s and Ranger lakes, as well as the Oxbow Lagoon.
